Mastodons Fall in Final Minute on the Road

MACOMB, Ill. - The IPFW women's basketball team was unable to overcome 15 second-half free throws by Western Illinois as the Mastodons fell in Summit League action 59-55. IPFW ends the weekend with an overall record of 8-14 and 2-7 in league play.
Kamilah Carter led the Mastodons as she tied a career-high with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting and added a game-high three steals. Haley Seibert knocked down five three-pointers to finish with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. She also led the team with seven rebounds. The two combined to make 15 of IPFW's 21 field goals in the game.
Keanna Gary added six points and five rebounds. KeShyra McCarver led the 'Dons with a season- and game-high four assists.
The first half was one of extended runs by both teams, as the two sides combined for five stretches of six or more points. Western Illinois opened the game with six consecutive before the Mastodons responded with a run of eight straight. The Leathernecks came right back with eight consecutive points of their own. After a three by Carter, WIU score six more points as the 'Dons trailed by seven, 21-14 with 7:31 left.
IPFW closed out the first half with seven straight points, capped off by a layup from Carter with under six second left to give the Mastodons a 30-27 lead at the break.
Western Illinois opened the second half with an 11-6 advantage as the 'Dons trailed by two, 38-36, five minutes in. IPFW answered with a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 45-38. An 11-2 stretch over a 4:22 span gave the Leathernecks a two-point lead with 7:49 to go in the game.
The Mastodons reclaimed the lead once more with back-to-back buckets by Seibert and Carter, before WIU tied the game with 4:08 to play after making four free throws. Seibert tied the game again, 55-55, on a layup at the 1:53 mark, but Western Illinois connected on four straight free throws to end the game.
The IPFW defense held the Leathernecks to seven field goals in the second half, along with their fewest three-pointers (3) and three-point percentage (17.6%) of the season. For the game, Western Illinois attempted 26 free throws compared to seven for the Mastodons. Overall, the 'Dons connected on 21-of-54 (38.9%) from the field, 8-of-19 (42.1%) beyond the arc, and 5-of-7 (71.4%) at the free throw line.
IPFW returns to action on February 6 at South Dakota for an 8 p.m. ET tip-off.
