Big Second Half Not Enough For Mastodons
2/6/2015 11:14:00 PM | Women's Basketball
VERMILLION, S.D. - The IPFW women's basketball team scored 52 second-half points but it wasn't enough to overcame a 21-point halftime deficit as the Mastodons fell to South Dakota 91-80.
Haley Seibert scored a game-high 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including knocking down five from beyond the arc. Rachel Rinehart did a little bit of everything for the 'Dons, scoring 12 points with a team-high six rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Kamilah Carter scored eight points off the bench for IPFW. Courtney Ogle contributed six points, five rebounds, and three steals.
The Mastodons scored the first four points of the game before the Coyotes went on a 28-7 run over the next 9:57 as IPFW trailed 28-11. South Dakota used a 10-0 run near the end of the first half as the 'Dons trailed 49-28 at the break.
At the start the second half, IPFW chipped away at the USD lead with a 9-0 run capped off by an and-one from Rinehart. The streak was short lived as the Coyotes countered with a 17-3 advantage as the deficit grew to 26 points.
The 'Dons never gave up down the stretch, outscoring South Dakota 23-7 in the final 4:32, but it wasn't enough to take down the Coyotes.
On the night the Mastodons shot 26-of-61 (42.6%) overall from the floor and 13-of-28 (46.4%) on three-pointers. The team also connected on 15-of-18 (83.3%) at the free throw line.
IPFW returns to action on February 8 at South Dakota State for a 5 p.m. ET tip-off.
