Mastodons Unable to Overcome Bruins

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The 15th ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team fell to No. 5 UCLA in four sets on Friday evening in its second match of the Asics Invitational, hosted by UC Santa Barbara. The Mastodons fought hard before falling 23-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19.
Alex Harthaller, Bryan Saunders, and Nick Smalter each finished with 11 kills, while Omar Rivera dished out 45 assists. Luis Bertran led the Blue and White with nine digs, while Ramon Burgos earned three blocks.
The 'Dons jumped out to a 4-0 lead to open the first set before the Bruins stormed back with four points of their own. Both teams exchanged points prior to IPFW jumping to an 11-8 lead. UCLA would then go on an 8-2 run, to help them win the first set, 25-23.
The second set opened with back-and-forth scoring, before each team had their own three-point runs to tie the set at 17. IPFW held a 21-20 lead late in the set before UCLA earned three points, eventually winning the set 25-23.
The Mastodons came out strong in the third set, earning leads of 7-3 and 12-7. UCLA cut the lead down to 13-11 prior to IPFW going on a three-point run. The Blue and White cruised in the set, finishing 25-17.
In the final set, IPFW held a slim 6-5 lead before UCLA earned the next five points. The Bruins eventually went on a 6-2 run, putting UCLA up 21-14 and finishing the set with a 25-19 win.
The Mastodons are back in action when they face host school UC Santa Barbara in the Asics Invitational on January 10 at 9:30 p.m.
