IPFW Battles At Valparaiso Before Falling 78-64

VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Alec Peters scored a game-high 24 points to lead defending Horizon League Champion Valparaiso University past visiting IPFW, 78-64, in the season-opening men's college basketball game Friday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center in Valparaiso. Junior Mo Evans scored a team-high 17 points for the Mastodons (0-1), who trailed just 65-61, before the Crusaders (1-0) outscored their stubborn visitors 13-3 over the final 3:43 to finally earn the victory. IPFW will return home to host NCAA Division III Manchester University at the Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
The closely played contest throughout featured eight lead changes and four ties during the 40 minutes. IPFW took an early 3-2 advantage on a three-point field goal by senior Joe Reed just 28-seconds into the game. A layup from Evans at 15:02 had the Mastodons ahead 9-7, but a 12-5 run by Valparaiso had the hosts in front 19-14 at 6:45 behind five points each from Jubril Adekoya and David Skara. A pair of free throws from Peters made it 31-21 at 2:52, but IPFW battled back before the intermission with an 8-3 run, including a three-pointer by Evans, to close to within 34-29 at halftime.
IPFW began the second half with an 11-6 run to tie the contest at 40-40 with 15:27 remaining, getting five quick points from Evans along with the tying three-pointer by senior Michael Calder. A quick 10-0 run by Valparaiso made it 50-40 at 13:07, and a pair of free throws by Skara had the hosts ahead 52-41 with 12:08 left to play. Consecutive layups from Evans and redshirt freshman John Konchar, along with a three-pointer by redshirt-senior Max Landis, had the Mastodons within 53-48 at 9:57. A layup from Landis at 7:15 had the hard-nosed visitors within 59-55, and a free throw by Konchar with 4:11 on the clock made it 65-61. Valparaiso, however, was finally able to secure their win with the late 13-3 run over the final 3:43.
Evans led IPFW with his 17 points, including 2-4 three-pointers, adding three assists. Landis finished with 14 points for the Mastodons, including 11 in the second half, making 3-6 three-pointers while adding four assists and a game-high three steals. Konchar added 11 points in his first college game, along with two steals, while freshman Charles Ruise Jr. contributed eight points (2-3 3FGs) off the bench. IPFW shot 44% (23-52) from the field, including 41% (9-22) on three-pointers, and 60% (9-15) at the free throw line.
