IPFW Runs Past Manchester 85-53

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Redshirt-senior Max Landis led four players in double-figure scoring with 14 points to lead IPFW past visiting NCAA Division III Manchester University, 85-53, in men's college basketball Monday night at the Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne. Junior transfer DeAngelo Stewart added a career-high 13 points for the Mastodons (1-1), while redshirt-sophomore transfer Racine Talla and freshman Kason Harrell each contributed career-highs of 10 points. The Spartans (0-1) were led by Robie Johnson with a game-high 15 points. IPFW will play on the road at Austin Peay University of the Ohio Valley Conference on Wednesday night in Clarksville, Tennessee at 8 p.m.
Landis opened the contest with the first of his game-high four three-point field goals for the early 3-0 advantage at 19:27. Landis added another three-pointer and a jumper for eight quick points as IPFW led 12-10 at 14:21. Following a tie at 12-12, the Mastodons used a 17-3 run to take a 29-15 lead with 6:47 left in the first half. Six different players contributed to the outburst, including six points from Stewart, off the bench, and four from redshirt-junior Brent Calhoun, along with a three-pointer off the bench, as well, by senior Michael Calder. IPFW extended the lead to 38-21 at the intermission, getting four points each down the stretch from senior Joe Reed and junior Mo Evans.
IPFW outscored Manchester 18-9 to start the second half to take a 56-30 advantage, getting two more three-pointers from Landis along with a fast break slam dunk and a three-pointer on consecutive possessions by Stewart. The Mastodons were able to play 12 of 13 players in uniform while taking their largest lead of the night, 75-42, with 3:41 remaining on a pair of free throws by Harrell, who scored all 10 of his points off the bench over the final 4:51, including a pair of three-pointers and a dunk, as well.
Landis finished with his team-high 14 points, including 4-5 three-pointers. Stewart added 13 points and career-highs of six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Talla and Harrell each had 10 points, and Talla also grabbed a career-high seven rebounds. Freshman Charles Ruise Jr. contributed a career-high nine point, off the bench, while Evans finished with eight points, five rebounds and four assists. IPFW shot 45% (27-60) from the field, including 44% (12-27) on three-pointers, and 68% (19-28) at the free throw line. The Mastodons forced 16 turnovers that they converted into 22 points.

IPFW now leads the all-time series against Manchester, 7-4, including six-straight wins against the Spartans and seven wins in the last eight games of the series.
