IPFW Earns First Road Win At Austin Peay 80-77
11/18/2015 11:53:00 PM | Men's Basketball
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Redshirt-freshman John Konchar posted his first collegiate double-double with game and career-highs of 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead IPFW past Ohio Valley Conference member Austin Peay University, 80-77, in men's college basketball at the Dunn Center in Clarksville, Tennessee on Wednesday night. The visiting Mastodons (2-1) earned their first road win of the season by making 11-14 free throws over the final 3:48. The host Governors (0-3), who missed 2-3 free throws with an opportunity to tie the game with nine-seconds remaining, were led by Josh Robinson with 25 points. IPFW will host SIU Edwardsville, also members of the OVC, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne on Saturday, November 21, at 2:30 p.m.
Austin Peay took an early 5-0 lead at 18:13, before IPFW fought back with a 7-2 run to tie it at 7-7 with 16:34 on the clock as Konchar made back-to-back three-point field goals. The Mastodons extended their run to lead 15-9 at 14:55, getting three-pointers from redshirt-senior Max Landis and junior Mo Evans, along with a layup by senior Joe Reed. The Governors rallied back, however, to take a 27-23 advantage on a three-pointer by Robinson at 7:07. IPFW, though, finished the half strong by outscoring APU 20-12 to lead 43-39 at the intermission. Evans scored 15 first-half points, while Konchar added 14.
IPFW continued its strong play to begin the second half, taking its biggest lead at 52-42 with 16:46 remaining, getting five quick points from Konchar, including a tip-in and a conventional three-point play inside off an offensive rebound. The Mastodons still led 59-50 with 12:33 on the clock following a basket inside from Reed, before APU rallied with nine-straight points – five from Robinson -- to tie it at 59-59 with 9:44 left. Konchar, however, answered with his fourth three-pointer off an assist from Evans, and IPFW led the rest of the way. The Mastodons scored 16 of their final 18 points at the free throw line, making 16-19 over the final 8:30, along with a coast-to-coast layup by senior Michael Calder while converting another old-fashioned three-point play at 4:29 that made it 69-65.
Konchar, playing in just his third college game, led IPFW with his career-night of 28 points (9-12 FGs, 4-5 3FGs, 6-6 FTs) and 11 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double. Evans added 20 points and a game-high seven rebounds for the Mastodons, while Reed had 11 points and six rebounds. Landis and Calder each contributed nine points to the victory. IPFW shot 41% (24-58) from the field, including 33% (10-30) on three-pointers, and 71% (22-31) at the free throw line.
Robinson led Austin Peay with his 25 points, including 4-9 three-pointers and 9-9 free throws. Khalil Davis added 23 points for the Governors, making 10-14 free throws, while Chris Horton had 16 points and nine rebounds. APU shot 49% (23-47) from the field, including 33% (5-15) on three-pointers, and 74% (26-35) at the line.
