11/21/2015 6:12:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Senior Joe Reed scored 20 points to lead IPFW to an 87-67 men's college basketball victory past SIUE of the Ohio Valley Conference Saturday afternoon at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Redshirt-senior Max Landis added 19 points for the host Mastodons (3-1), who won their third consecutive contest, while redshirt-freshman John Konchar grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. Grant Fiorentinos led the Cougars (1-2) with a game-high 21 points. IPFW will play again on Tuesday night, November 24, at Miami (Ohio) University of the Mid-American Conference in Oxford, Ohio beginning at 7 p.m.
IPFW jumped out to an early 6-0 advantage behind back-to-back three-point field goals by Reed. The Mastodons extended their lead to 19-8 at 11:28 on a three-pointer from junior transfer DeAngelo Stewart, and the margin was 15 points at 30-15 with 8:06 on the clock after another three-pointer by Reed, who scored 12 points during the first 11:54. Another quick run of 10-2 provided for the largest lead of the game, 40-17, at 6:14, as junior Mo Evans scored five points, including a three-pointer. IPFW maintained a comfortable 45-29 lead at the intermission, getting 14 first-half points from Reed and eight points from Landis.
IPFW continued its momentum to start the second half, leading 59-39 at 13:35 following consecutive three-pointers from Stewart, while Landis added four points, as well. SIUE, however, used a 17-6 run to close to within 65-56 with 6:54 remaining after a three-pointer by C.J. Carr. The Mastodons, though, would not allow the Cougars any closer, extending the lead once-again with a tip-in from Konchar at 6:32, a layup by Reed at 6:07 and a jumper from Landis at 4:51 that answered each SIUE attempt to close the gap further. Evans capped things with a pair of free throws with under a minute to play.
Reed led IPFW with his team-high 20 points, including 3-6 three-pointers, before fouling out with 1:33 remaining. Landis added 19 points for the Mastodons, followed by Stewart with 12 points (3-6 3FGs) and Evans with 11 points and five assists. Konchar finished with nine points, along with his game and career-highs of 15 rebounds and six assists. IPFW shot 48% (28-59) from the field, including 41% (11-27) on three-pointers and 69% (20-29) at the free throw line. The Mastodons have made at least 10 three-pointers during each of the last three games.
Fiorentinos led SIUE with his game-high 21 points, off the bench, followed by Burak Eslik with 16 points and Jalen Henry with 11 points. SIUE shot 39% (24-61) from the field, including 20% (3-15) on three-pointers and 67% (16-24) at the line.
