
IPFW Welcomes Manchester Monday Night In Home Opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – IPFW will welcome in-state NCAA Division III opponent Manchester University of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in men's basketball on Monday night, November 16, at the Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne at 7:30 p.m. It's the first home game of the 2015-16 campaign for second-year head coach Jon Coffman's squad, and also the first of four exempt games in the Spartan Showcase that will include three games at the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina, hosted by UNC Greensboro, Nov. 27-29. Junior Mo Evans led the Mastodons (0-1) in their season-opening road game at Valparaiso University last Friday night with 17 points, followed in double-figure scoring by redshirt-senior Max Landis (14) and redshirt-freshman John Konchar (11). The Spartans (0-0) are coached by first-year head coach Gerad Good and return their leading scorer from a year ago in senior Matt Brown (17.0 points).

Scouting the Spartans
Manchester is playing its season-opener after finishing 5-20 during 2014-15, including 4-14 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Spartans of first year head coach Gerad Good return nine letter winners, including five who started at least 12 games a year ago. Top returning scorers include seniors Matt Brown (17.0 points, 52 3FGs) and Brady Dolezal (13.9 points), along with juniors Chase Casteel (11.8 points, 52 3 FGs) and Blake Brouwer (10.5 points).

Mo Evans scored a team-high 17 points as IPFW trailed just 65-61 before Valparaiso used a 13-3 run over the final 3:43 to earn the 78-64 win. The closely played contest throughout featured eight lead changes and four ties as the Mastodons took an early 3-2 advantage on a three-point field goal by Joe Reed just 28 seconds into the game. A layup from Evans at 15:02 had IPFW ahead 9-7, but a 12-5 run put the Crusaders in front 19-14 at 6:45. The hosts led 31-21 at 2:52, but the visitors battled back before the intermission with an 8-3 run, including a three-pointer by Evans, to close to within 34-29 at halftime.
IPFW began the second half with an 11-6 run to tie the contest at 40-40 with 15:27 remaining, getting five quick points from Evans along with the tying three-pointer by Michael Calder. A quick 10-0 run by Valpo made it 50-40 at 13:07, and a pair of free throws had the hosts ahead 52-41 with 12:08 left to play. Consecutive layups from Evans and John Konchar, along with a three-pointer by Max Landis, had the Mastodons within 53-48 at 9:57. A layup from Landis at 7:15 had the hard-nosed visitors within 59-55, and a free throw by Konchar with 4:11 on the clock made it 65-61. Valparaiso, however, was finally able to secure its win with the late 13-3 run over the final 3:43.
