Mo Evans, Max Landis Named To Spartan Showcase All-Tournament Team
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jace Hogan scored 16 points, off the bench, to lead Navy (6-2) of the Patriot League to a 75-53 men's college basketball victory past IPFW Sunday afternoon in the Spartan Showcase at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Junior Mo Evans scored a game-high 19 points for the Mastodons (6-2), who had their six-game winning streak stopped, though the program is still off to their best start to a season as a Division I program (2001-02). IPFW will play again on Thursday night, December 5, at Cal Poly of the Big West Conference in San Luis Obispo, California beginning at 10 p.m. ET.
IPFW, playing its third game in less than 48 hours in Greensboro, fell behind early, trailing 7-2 at 15:26, before battling back within 11-10 at 11:57. A jumper from Evans at 8:03 had the Mastodons ahead 16-13, but Navy responded with 10 unanswered points to lead 23-16 with 5:30 on the clock. A three-pointer by Evans made it 25-23 at 4:12, but the Midshipmen again answered with a 16-2 run behind seven quick points from Shawn Anderson to close out the first period with a 41-25 halftime advantage.
IPFW opened the second half with an 18-6 run to close to within 47-43 with 13:55 remaining. Evans (7) and Landis (6) combined for 13 quick points to spark the Mastodons. Navy, however, once-again responded well with 12-straight points, including four from Hogan, to lead 59-43 at 10:07. IPFW could only reduce the margin to 13 points on several occasions down the stretch, the last at 65-52 with 5:21 left to play on a layup by senior Joe Reed. The Midshipmen enjoyed their largest lead with the final margin.
Evans led IPFW with his game-high 19 points. Landis added 10 points and a game-high three assists for the Mastodons, followed by Reed with eight points and five rebounds, while senior Michael Calder finished with seven points, off the bench. IPFW shot 31% (14-45) from the field, including 23% (6-26) on three-pointers and 70% (19-27) at the free throw line.
Evans and Landis were each named to the Spartan Showcase All-Tournament Team, as selected by the respective head coaches. Evans averaged 13.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists, while shooting 42% (18-43) from the field, 36% (10-28) on three-pointers and 80% (8-10) at the line during the four games, adding five steals. Landis also averaged 13.5 points, along with 2.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists, while shooting 40% (14-35) from the field, 48% (11-23) on three-pointers and 83% (15-18) at the line during the four games, adding five steals, as well.
Hogan led Navy with his 16 points and game-high eight rebounds, while Anderson added 15 points. The Midshipmen shot 54% (31-57) from the field, including 50% (5-10) on three-pointers and 44% (8-18) at the line. Navy outscored IPFW 45-14 in the paint.
Navy, who won all four of its games played during the Spartan Showcase, now leads the all-time series against IPFW, 2-1.
