Landis Ties Program Division I Record With Nine Three-Point Field Goals (9-12)
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis scored a game and career-high 28 points to lead IPFW to an 85-68 men's college basketball victory past Austin Peay State University of the Ohio Valley Conference on Saturday afternoon at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne. Landis tied the program's Division I record with nine three-point field goals (9-12), while junior Mo Evans/Indianapolis scored 22 points for the Mastodons (8-4), who gained the lead and took control with a 24-0 run in the second half. Chris Horton led the visiting Governors (4-6) with 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. IPFW will take a week off for fall semester examinations before hosting Stetson University of the Atlantic Sun Conference next Saturday, December 19, at Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne at 1 p.m.
IPFW led 7-4 early at 16:13 following a basket inside from redshirt-sophomore Racine Talla/Dakar, Senegal, the first three-pointer by Landis and another basket inside, this time from redshirt-junior Brent Calhoun/Indianapolis. Austin Peay, however, used a 16-5 run to lead 20-12 at 12:00. The Mastodons answered with six-straight points, including another three-pointer by Landis, to make it 20-18 at 8:32, and a pair of free throws from senior Michael Calder/Fort Lauderdale, Fla. tied it at 23-23 with 4:21 on the first-half clock. The Governors outscored their hosts 10-6 over the final 4:09 to lead 33-29 at halftime.
IPFW closed to within 41-39 at 15:51, getting six quick points from Evans, but Austin Peay stretched it back out to a 47-40 advantage with 14:00 remaining after a three-pointer. Evans responded with a driving three-point play on a layup and free throw at 13:48, and senior Joe Reed/Greenwood followed with an effort-play inside on an offensive rebound and put back down low at 13:22 that got the crowd back into the contest, and when redshirt-freshman John Konchar/Chicago, Ill. got a two-handed slam dunk at 12:39, it was tied at 47-47. The Mastodons maintained their momentum swing and carried it to the impressive 24-0 run to lead 64-47 with 8:39 on the clock. Konchar added another two-handed dunk on a fast break pass from Evans, and Landis connected on three more three-pointers during the run, the last two back-to-back for the 17-point margin. APSU was never closer than 15 points down the stretch, as Landis added three more triples, and Evans contributed six late points, as well.
Landis led IPFW with his game and career-best 28 points, making 9-12 three-pointers to tie the program's DI record, adding a game-high three steals. Evans added 22 points for this third-straight 20-point game and fourth this season, adding a career-high nine rebounds and a game-high four assists for the Mastodons, followed by Reed with 10 points, while Calhoun and Konchar each contributed eight points. IPFW shot 47% (27-58) from the field, including 53% (20-38) in the second half toward 56 second-half points, 46% (12-26) on three-pointers and 66% (19-29) at the free throw line.
The school record for three-pointers in a game is 10, made by Duane Shears against Indianapolis on February 27, 1992 when the Mastodons competed in Division II. Terry Collins made nine three-pointers at UC Irvine on Dec. 28, 2002, the second season of DI, while Eric Vaughn made nine three-pointers at Goshen on Feb. 4, 1992.
