IPFW Records 21 Steals in Road Loss to Milwaukee
12/29/2015 1:06:00 AM | Women's Basketball
MILWAUKEE - The IPFW women's basketball team recorded 21 steals, the fifth most in program history, but were unable to turn them into a victory as the Mastodons fell at Milwaukee 73-60.
The 21 steals by the 'Dons are the most for the team against a Division I opponent and the third most since moving to Division I in the 2001-02 season.
Rachel Rinehart led the Mastodons in every category on the night, scoring 14 points with a career-high six steals, five assists, and four rebounds. Josie Fisher also went for 14 points, including connecting on 10-of-14 at the free throw line. Her 14 attempts are tied for second most by an IPFW freshman, and the most since Leah Sheets had 14 against Southern Indiana on Jan. 28, 1995.
Both sides played tough defense in the first quarter as IPFW led 17-15 with 8:21 to go in the second frame. The Mastodon offense went cold from there as Milwaukee used a 13-0 run in a six-minute span before Allyson Bunch ended the streak with 1:52 to play. Fisher connected on a jumper at the buzzer as the 'Dons trailed 32-23 at the half.
IPFW continued its run to start the third quarter as the Mastodons capped off a 10-0 advantage on a Rinehart layup at the 6:21 mark, to pull within two. Two minutes later Rinehart closed the gap to one on a free throw, 34-33. That would be as close as the 'Dons would get as the Panthers rallied with the next eight points to put the game away.
On the night, the Mastodons went for a season-high 23-of-37 (62.2%) at the free throw line. From the field they connected on 16-of-59 (27.1%) and 5-of-22 (22.7%) beyond the three-point arc.
IPFW returns to action on New Year's Day to open Summit League play against IUPUI at 7 p.m. inside the Gates Center.
