IPFW Wins Summit League Opener Past Oral Roberts 90-84

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis scored 21 points to lead IPFW to a 90-84 men's college basketball victory past Oral Roberts University in The Summit League opener on Wednesday night at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne. Landis made 5-9 three-point field goals to lead four players in double-figure scoring, while junior Mo Evans/Indianapolis posted his first career double-double with 15 points and a game and career-high 11 rebounds for the host Mastodons (11-4, 1-0 Summit League), who have attained their finest Division I start to a season. Obi Emegano led the visiting Golden Eagles (8-7, 0-1 Summit League) with a game and career-high 38 points. IPFW will host Purdue North Central in its final non-conference contest at the Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne on Saturday, January 2, at 7 p.m.
IPFW took an early 2-0 advantage at 19:19 following a coast-to-coast layup from senior Michael Calder/Fort Lauderdale, Fla., off the bench, and it was a 6-4 lead at 18:15 on another Calder basket, this time on an offensive rebound. ORU, however, responded with eight unanswered points to lead 12-6 at 16:36, getting six points from Jalen Bradley, before the Mastodons used an 11-0 run to go ahead 17-12 with 11:30 on the clock. Redshirt-freshman John Konchar/Chicago, Ill. scored on a pair of baskets inside during the run, while Landis added a three-pointer and redshirt-junior Brent Calhoun/Indianapolis added a jump hook inside, as well. Another Calhoun basket made it 21-17 at 9:53, before the Golden Eagles followed with seven-straight points – five by Emegano -- to lead 24-21 at 8:46. IPFW answered with a 14-4 run to lead 35-28 at 4:37, getting another three-pointer from Landis and two three-pointers by junior DeAngelo Stewart/Detroit, Mich., off the bench. A 10-2 run by ORU, sparked by six more points from Emegano, had the visitors in front 38-37 at the 2:00 mark, but the hosts closed the half with another three-pointer by Stewart and one from senior Joe Reed/Greenwood to lead 43-41 at the intermission. Emegano had 18 first-half points, while Landis and Stewart each had 10 points.
IPFW outscored ORU 17-9 to open the second half, getting nine quick points from Landis on three more three-pointers, to lead 60-50 at 15:46. The Golden Eagles responded with a 10-0 run to tie it at 60-60 with 11:27 remaining, as Emegano scored four more points. The closely-contested league battle that featured eight lead changes and nine ties throughout, was knotted at 69-69 with 7:59 left after a jumper by Emegano, but the Mastodons once again showed their resilience with a 12-4 run to take control at 81-73 with 3:14 on the clock – Evans scoring five points for the hosts. IPFW secured their well-earned triumph with 7-10 free throws over the final 1:40, including 4-4 by Evans, who also added a layup before the late free throws. Emegano did add two late three-pointers, and DaQuan Jeffries scored two quick layups, to get ORU within 86-83 with 55-seconds left, but the visitors got no closer. Evans and Konchar each had key blocks of ORU three-point attempts in the final 20-seconds, as well.
Landis led IPFW with his 21 points, making 5-9 three-pointers, adding three assists. Evans added his first collegiate double-double with 15 points and his game and career-high 11 rebounds, along with a game-high seven assists for the Mastodons, joined by Konchar and Stewart with 15 points each, as well. Konchar also had nine rebounds, while Stewart was 4-6 on three-pointers to match his career-high in scoring (15). Calder finished with nine points, a career-high eight rebounds and five assists, while Reed had nine points and five rebounds. IPFW shot 46% (34-74) from the field, including 44% (11-25) on three-pointers and 69% (11-16) at the line. The Mastodons won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding ORU, 48-33, and had a 19-7 advantage in second chance points, and a 24-6 advantage in bench scoring.

IPFW is now 11-4 overall for its best start to a season as a Division I program (2001-02). The Mastodons of 2010-11 and 2013-14 each began with 10-4 records, before each fell in the 15th game (10-5). The all-time best start is 11-0, accomplished during 1988-89 as a Division II member.
