FORT WAYNE, Ind. – IPFW women's soccer head coach Jason Burr announced the 2015 spring schedule on Thursday. The slate includes nine games over six weekends between the end of February and the end of April, with one of those games being the IPFW Alumni game on Saturday, April 18 at 5:30 p.m.
"After a challenging fall season, we are looking forward to continuing to play against quality opponents throughout the spring," said Burr. "We believe these games will test us in ways that will aid in the development of our players individually, as well as our program as a whole."
The schedule kicks off at the end of the month in DeKalb, Ill. as the Mastodons will participate in an all-day 7v7 tournament at Northern Illinois on Saturday, February 28 with their first game starting at 10:40 a.m. CT. The 'Dons will use a split squad playing with two separate teams for this event. One month later they will travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. for a 1:30 p.m. match on Saturday, March 28 against Eastern Michigan.
The 'Dons will return home on Sunday, April 12 for a double header at Hefner Field, taking on Tiffin and St. Joseph at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
The following weekend will be a busy one for the Mastodons with three games over two days, kicking off on Saturday, April 18 with a 2 p.m. matchup against Toledo. The day will end with the IPFW alumni game as the men's and women's teams will come together to celebrate each program and its past players.
"It is very important to IPFW and our athletic department generally, and our coaching staff and current players more specifically, that we connect with our alums and build relationships with the former student-athletes that built this program and laid the foundation for what we are doing here now," said Burr. "They played a massive part in where this program is and we want to make sure they know how much they are still valued and appreciated by this university. We wouldn't be here today if it weren't for them being here in the past."
The action-packed weekend will wrap up with the rare opportunity to play the Haitian U-20 National Team at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 19. Burr is particularly looking forward to this unique matchup.
"Anytime you are able to compete against players representing their national team it is a special occasion. This might be more true in soccer than any other sport because of the importance of the World Cup on an international stage," Burr expressed. "This isn't an opportunity that many collegiate players will have so we were very excited to agree to this game so our players could have this extraordinary experience."
The spring slate concludes with a double header in Charleston, Ill on Saturday, April 25. The 'Dons will face Parkland College at 1 p.m. CT and Eastern Illinois at 3 p.m. CT.
