Mastodons Unable to Keep Pace with Bearcats

LEBANON, Ill. – The 12th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team was unable to come from behind as MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) foe McKendree Bearcats took the match in four sets. The Mastodons finished 23-25, 25-23, 18-25, 21-25, falling to 10-5, 4-3 (MIVA), while the Bearcats improve to 6-12, 1-9 (MIVA).
Despite double-digit kills from Andrew Sellan and Ramon Burgos, the Blue and White were unable to complete a come from behind win on the road. Sellan earned 12 kills, hitting .500, while Burgos recorded 11 with a .471 attack percentage. Alex Harthaller led the 'Dons with six digs, as Luis Bertran finished with four. Omar Rivera recorded 46 assists in the loss.
Both teams split the first 12 points of the opening set, but the Bearcats would earn the next three points and hold onto the lead for the remainder of the set. The 'Dons threatened late, going on an 8-4 run to cut the deficit to 20-21. However, the teams would trade the last five points of the set as McKendree took it 25-23. Sellan earned four kills in the set as the Mastodons hit .476 as a team to open the match.
The Mastodons and Bearcats would be knotted at 10 a piece midway through the second set, but the Blue and White managed to go on a 4-1 run to take the lead. Later in the match, trailing 20-19, IPFW would take a timeout to calm the nerves of the 'Dons. Following the timeout, the Blue and White went on a 4-1 run, and closed the set out on a 6-3 run, earning a 25-23 second set victory. Sellan earned six kills in the set, while Burgos managed four. The set saw the score tied 12 times with four lead changes.
Trying to earn an edge in the match, IPFW was unable to match McKendree in the third set, falling behind early. Down 19-12, the Mastodons would earn four-straight points to cut the deficit to 19-16, but the Bearcats would hold on to win the set 25-18. The 'Dons combined for eight digs in the set, adding two blocks.
The final set saw IPFW go up 7-4 early on, but the Bearcats would storm back. With the match tied at 15, McKendree would take the next three points. The 'Dons would get within striking distance multiple times late in the set, cutting the Bearcat lead to within a point three times. Trailing 22-21, IPFW was unable to get over the hump, eventually dropping the set 25-21.
The Mastodons return to action when they host Loras on March 6 at 7 p.m.
