Rivera Reaches Milestone in Win over Lourdes

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Omar Rivera notches his 3,500th career assist while helping the 14th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team earn a 3-1 win over Lourdes on Saturday night. The Mastodons finished 25-15, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18, while improving to 14-6 overall. The Gray Wolves fall to 15-6 on the year.
Rivera sits3rd all-time in IPFW history in career assists, now with 3,517. Former Mastodon and US gold medalist Lloy Ball tops the career assist list with 6,526.
The Blue and White were caught in an early battle with the Gray Wolves as Lourdes took an early 7-5 lead in the first set. However, the Mastodons would take the next six points to regain the lead, before finishing the opening set 25-15. Both Alex Harthaller and Andrew Sellan earned three kills in the first set, while the team hit .533 as a whole.
Once again, Lourdes would earn an early lead, going up 8-4 in the second, but the 'Dons rallied back with four-straight points. The Gray Wolves answer with five points of their own, eventually going up 16-12. Later on, IPFW would come within two points of tying, being down 19-17, and then swap points with Lourdes until it was 23-22. However, the Gray Wolves were able to prevail 25-22.
For a third-consecutive set, Lourdes would earn an early lead, going up 8-7, but the Mastodons would find a way to respond, this time with four-straight points. With the Gray Wolves threatening and the 'Dons holding a one point lead, IPFW would earn six-consecutive points, making an insurmountable 19-12 lead for Lourdes to comeback from. Sellan led the 'Dons in the third set with six kills, while Luis Bertran earned three digs.
The fourth set saw the Blue and White take a 13-6 lead midway through the set. Lourdes would try to fight back, eventually cutting the lead to 19-17. However, IPFW would take six of the last seven points to secure the final set 25-18. Harthaller paced the Mastodons with four kills in the last set, while the team hit a combined .429.
For the match, IPFW edged Lourdes 43-40 in kills, while the Gray Wolves held a 39-38 upper hand in assists. The Mastodon defense was solid, earning a combined 27 blocks. Ramon Burgos led the way with seven blocks, while Rivera and Bryan Saunders each earned five.
The Mastodons travel to second-ranked Lewis on Tuesday, March 17 in a makeup match from the previously scheduled February 14 match in Romeoville, Illinois. The match is set to begin at 8 p.m.
