No. 15 Mastodons Fall in Three at No. 2 Loyola

CHICAGO – The 15th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball fell in straight sets to the second-ranked Loyola Ramblers on Thursday night. The Mastodons finished 17-25, 21-25, 17-25 falling to 16-8, 6-5 (MIVA), while the Ramblers improve to 17-1, 9-1 (MIVA).
Nick Smalter and Alex Harthaller each earned eight kills, while Smalter added five digs and an ace. Omar Rivera notched 28 assists, adding six digs, two blocks and three kills, while hitting .750 against the Ramblers.
After falling behind 8-2 early in the first set, the 'Dons stormed back with four-straight points, cutting the Loyola lead down to two. The Blue and White tried to keep up with the Ramblers, eventually coming to an 18-14 deficit, but Loyola was too much and took the opening set 25-17.
The Mastodons kept the second set close early on, trailing the Ramblers 9-7. Loyola would briefly pull away, going up 12-7, but IPFW battled back, eventually cutting the lead to 18-16. The Ramblers would increase the lead once again, but the 'Dons fought back, making it 23-19 late. The Blue and White managed to fend off two set points in the end, but the Ramblers still pulled away with the set 25-21.
The Ramblers stormed out in the third set, taking an early 4-1 lead, but IPFW fought back with consecutive points to bring it within one. Loyola would increase the lead to 15-8. But the 'Dons would go on a 5-1 run, cutting the Rambler lead to four. Loyola would eventually take the set 25-17.
The Mastodons return home when they host No. 4 Lewis on March 28 at 7 p.m. in the Gates Center. Rivera, Ramon Burgos, Bryan Saunders, Jordan Armstrong, Brett Stetson, Jeremy Swartz, and Collin Cohen will be honored prior to the match as a part of the Senior Day festivities.
