SCOUTING THE COYOTES
South Dakota comes into the Summit League Tournament riding a stretch of six wins in the team's last eight games, including an 80-64 victory over eventual Summit League Champion South Dakota State in the season finale.
In the win over the Jackrabbits, All-Newcomer Team honoree Tre Burnett picked up a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double. South Dakota State jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead through the first three-plus minutes of the game, and led by nine four and a half minutes into the contest, before the Coyotes ended the half by out-scoring SDSU 39-20, and never trailed again in the 16-point win.
Casey Kasperbauer scored 17 points, hitting 4-of-7 from long range, while Brandon Bos scored a dozen. First Team All-Summit League selection Tyler Larson scored eight points, as James Hunter also added eight points. Burnetete's 13 rebounds helped the Coyotes out-rebound the Jackrabbits 36-to-33 for the game, with Bos and Trey Norris leading the team with four assists in the win.
Larson leads a trio of players in double-figure scoring average at 14.4 points per game while Bos averages 13.4 and Kasperbauer 10.0. Burnette is just off of the double-figure pace at 8.0, with Hunter and Norris averaging 5.5 and 5.2. Larson also leads the team in rebounds (7.7) assists (2.9 per game), and is third on the team in steals. Burnette has a team-best 41 steals, while Eric Robertson leads the team with 23 blocked shots.
20-20-20-20-20-20 VISION
After Joe Edwards' 20-point performance against North Dakota State, the IPFW basketball team has six players this season that have eclipsed the 20-point scoring plateau. IPFW is the only team in the Summit League this season with six players having scored 20 or more points, as four schools (South Dakota State, South Dakota, Omaha, and Western Illinois) each have done it with four players. In all, 15 schools have accomplished the feat of six 20-point scorers.
CLIMBING TOWARDS FOUR DIGITS
Joe Edwards is within striking distance of becoming the 11th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau, as the senior has 991 points coming into the game with the South Dakota Coyotes.,
ALL-TIME AGAINST SOUTH DAKOTA
IPFW holds a narrow 5-3 lead in the all-time series between the teams, including a two-point Coyote win in Fort Wayne earlier this season and an 11-point IPFW win in Vermillion in January. Of the three years the teams have met twice, there has been just one series sweep, when IPFW accomplished the fact in the 2012-13 season.
