Mastodons’ Season Ends with Tough Five Set Loss in MIVA Quarterfinals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Despite double-doubles from Alex Harthaller and Omar Rivera, the 15th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team was unable to overcome a late surge from Lindenwood, falling in five sets. The Mastodons finished 25-21, 24-26, 21-25, 25-22, 13-15 to end the season 18-12 overall. Lindenwood improved to 13-11 on the season. Mastodon head coach Arnie Ball finishes his career 570-421 overall and 336-187 at home.
Harthaller led the 'Dons with 16 kills and 10 digs, while adding two aces and two blocks, for his second double-double of the season. Rivera finished with 43 assists and 10 digs, while adding two kills and three aces. Nick Smalter came close to a double-double, but ended the match with 16 kills and seven digs, while adding six total blocks.
Luis Bertran earned 12 digs against the Lions to finish the season with 284 digs, placing him with the third most season digs in IPFW history behind Shaun Dryden (292 in 2010) and Jay Golsteyn (106 in 1988).
The Blue and White snagged an early 9-5 lead in the opening set, but the Lions would a 5-3 run to close the gap to 12-10. The 'Dons responded with a 7-2 run to go up by seven, highlighted by consecutive kills from Smalter. Lindenwood would try to claw back, eventually holding off two set points to make it 24-21, but the Mastodons proved to be too much in the opening set, taking it 25-21. Harthaller led the Mastodons with seven kills and two digs in the set.
Both teams were caught in a close one for the second set as they were tied after the first 10 points. IPFW would take three-consecutive points to go up 12-10 midway through the set, but a 5-1 run from Lindenwood would give the Lions another lead. The 'Dons would eventually take a 20-17 lead late in the set, but LU would continue to fight back, eventually going taking the set 26-24.
Lindenwood would jump to an 11-7 lead midway through the third set, but IPFW would chip away to eventually cut the lead to 18-15. After falling behind 20-15, the 'Dons would fight back with a 5-1 run to bring it within a point of the Lions. However, Lindenwood would take the set 25-21.
The fourth set saw each team open with big runs as the Lions took the first three points, followed by the Blue and White grabbing the next four. Lindenwood answered back with four-straight points to make it 7-4 early on. Later in the set the Mastodons would earn six-straight points to go up 13-10 over the Lions. After swapping the next five points, Lindenwood would eventually take a 21-20 advantage over the 'Dons. With their backs against the ropes, the Mastodons would finish the set on a 5-1 run, taking it 25-22 and forcing a decisive fifth set.
In the final set, the Blue and White rumbled out to an early 5-1 advantage and eventually going up 11-7. However, the Lions battled back with five-consecutive points during an 8-2 run to steal the set 15-13 over IPFW and advance to the MIVA Semifinals.
Lindenwood will face the winner of Lewis versus Grand Canyon in the MIVA Semifinals.
