FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Three of IPFW's 16 athletic programs have earned a perfect 1,000 score in the 2013-14 Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Report, released on Wednesday, as women's tennis, men's golf, and women's golf were the trio to to earn the honor. Six programs: women's tennis, men's basketball, women's outdoor track and field, women's indoor track & field, men's golf, and women's golf; posted single-season APR higher than the national average for their sports.Â
NCAA President Mark Emmert congratulated Division I students on their academic success.
"More college athletes than ever are succeeding in the classroom, and I applaud their commitment to academic achievement. We are pleased and proud of their accomplishments," Emmert said. "Our goal always has been to encourage students to achieve academically and earn their degrees. Every year, Division I students prove that both academic and athletic success are achievable."
Every Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year, based on the eligibility, graduation, and retention of each scholarship student-athlete.Â
"Having three of our athletic teams earn perfect season APR scores, and six over that national average, show the academic dedication of our student-athletes," said IPFW athletic director Kelley Hartley Hutton.
Highlighting the individual sports' history of success has been the women's golf team under the direction of head coach Jess Steward. The program has reached a single-season perfect APR scores for each of the last four seasons.
For women's tennis, it is their second straight perfect seasonal APR score, and the fourth time in the past five seasons under head coach Eric Burns.
Men's golf's score is the third single-season perfect mark in the past five seasons under head coach Billy King.
Men's basketball, under first-year head coach Jon Coffman, exceeds the national average for the fourth time in the last five seasons, including back-to-back perfect years in 2011-12 and 2012-13.
The women's track & field marks are the third time in the past four seasons that the program has exceeded the national average under head coach Mike Fruchey.
