Women's Soccer Falls in Season Opener
8/21/2015 10:21:00 PM | Women's Soccer
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - In its 2015 season opener, the IPFW women's soccer team fell 3-1 on the road against the Northern Kentucky Norse on Friday evening.
Kallianne Mogler scored IPFW's lone goal in the second half, off of an assist from Rachel Good, snapping the attempt at a clean slate for the Norse.
"I thought we showed terrific effort and character, specifically in the second half," said IPFW head coach Jason Burr. "Later in the game we changed our formation slightly to add more of an attacking presence, and it afforded us a few opportunities on goal that we didn't see in the first half - which resulted in Kallianne Mogler's goal, off of a great long-distance dribble in our attacking half by Rachel Good."
Northern Kentucky jumped ahead quickly in thee contest, scoring in the third minute of the match, but neither team could find the back of the net for the remainder of the first half, with the hosts holding onto a 1-0 advantage through the first 45 minutes of the game.
Less than three minutes into the second half the Norse struck again, taking a 2-0 lead, before scoring again seven minutes later to push ahead to a 3-0 advantage.
In the 65th minute, the Mastodons reached the scoreboard when Good found Mogler in the right portion of the goal, and put it past NKU goalkeeper Brooke Schocker into the lower left corner of the goal.
IPFW kept attacking; however, neither team could find the back of the net again, with the scoreboard running out with a 3-1 Northern Kentucky win.
The Mastodons got two shots apiece from Mogler and Good, and six other players - Kassidy Simpkins, Erin Gill, Mayson Whitman, Tessa Edwards, Andie Lazzerini, and Chani Warfield - had one shot apiece. Goalkeeper Kiley Dunning stopped six goal attempts in the game - five in the first half.
As a team, IPFW was out-shot 30-to-10, while falling 7-2 in corner kicks.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday afternoon when the team travels to Bowling Green, Ohio, to take on the Bowling Green Falcons in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
"We are already looking forward to the opportunity to get back on the field on Sunday at Bowling Green," said Burr. "We have some very specific goals we are looking to achieve in that match based on what we saw out of our team tonight."
