Mastodons Fall to Second-Half Flurry in Bowling Green
8/23/2015 12:47:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - In IPFW's first match in a three-match stretch against teams from the Mid-American Conference, Bowling Green scored two goals in a one-minute span in the second half, sending IPFW to a 3-0 loss on Sunday afternoon (August 23) at Cochrane Stadium.
"I thought for 60, 65 minutes of the game that we were the better team on the field," said IPFW head coach Jason Burr. "I was so proud to see the team keeping possession and building out of the back from the defensive third. I feel like we had the game by the scruff of the neck, and it is just one of those unfortunate moments where if you can't finish the task - complete the job - it can really change the mentality of a game."
Despite a scoreless first half, each team had a number of chances, as both squads posted eight shots - three each from IPFW's Tessa Edwards and Rachel Good. Four of IPFW's shots came in the first 20 minutes of the game, with half of those missing high, and the other half missing left. Goalkeeper Kiley Dunning picked up three saves in the opening period, keeping a clean slate through 45 minutes of game play.
Nine minutes into the second half the Mastodons got a strong scoring opportunity when Edwards' shot at the top of the goalie box was saved, keeping the score 0-0.
In the 62nd minute of the game, the Mastodons hit the post on back-to-back shot attempts from Erin Gill and Kallianne Mogler.
Bowling Green ended IPFW's shutout attempt with a shot from Haley Parkinson that hit directly in front of the Mastodon keeper, and bounced over her head and into the goal to give the Falcons a one-goal lead. Less than a minute later the hosts struck again with a goal from Erica Hubert from outside of the left corner of the 18-yard box, staking BGSU to a 2-0 advantage.
The Falcons scored the third and final goal of the match in the 83rd minute, closing out the scoring in the contest.
Despite the three goals in the second half, IPFW was only out-shot 14-to-11, while holding a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Mayson Whitman and Edwards took a match-high four shots in the loss, while Good added three while Gill and Mogler each had two. Dunning had four saves while allowing the two goals, as Haley Lydon picked up three saves in just under 13 minutes of work, while giving up one goal.
The Mastodons return home for a two-match home weekend with contests on Friday, August 28 against Western Michigan and on Sunday, August 30 against Ball State.
