Mastodons Fall in Second Half to Broncos
8/28/2015 10:59:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - For the second consecutive match the IPFW women's soccer team went into halftime against a Mid-American Conference opponent knotted in a scoreless tie, and for the second time the opponent out-scored the Mastodons in the second half, as the Blue and White fell to the Western Michigan Broncos by ,3-0 score on Friday afternoon in the first match of a women's / men's doubleheader.
The strong start for the team this season, giving up just one first-half goal through three games in the season, proves the strong play; however, the injury but has hampered the Mastodons all season, and the slim numbers early in the season for the squad have affected the team's second half result.
"We're thin right now with injuries, so it is difficult when you are asking a group of players to all play 90 minutes at the highest level," said IPFW head coach Jason Burr. "That is not meant to take anything away from Western Michigan - they are a very good side and from top to bottom, probably the best team we have played this season. They are going to do very well down the road. For our team, we put in a great first 45 minutes, but we need to find ways to put in a full 90 minutes from top to bottom from player one to player twenty."
Both teams came out strong to start the match; however, the Mastodons were out-shot 9-2 while the Broncos also held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. IPFW goalkeeper Kiley Dunning had one of her six saves in the opening 45 minutes, while WMU keeper Stephanie Heber was held without a shot stop in the period.
"Our assistant coach, Kelsey Passaglia, said it today, and it could not have been said much better, that most coaches can't say that their teams are first-half teams," said Burr. "I feel like that is what we are seeing right now out of our team. We're playing like a first-half team right now, which is awesome, but as we continue to go through the year we need to become more game-fit because that is the issue right now. We are fit, but not game-fit, yet. As we go through the rest of the season and get more game-fit and approach conference season, we will start to be able to see our team put together full 90-minute efforts."
The Broncos wasted little time in the second half to snap the shutout bid, with WMU's Emma Kahn scoring her first of two goals on the day five and a half minutes into the second stanza, before adding another eight and a half minutes later.
The Mastodons got their best scoring opportunity of the match in the 63rd minute when Kallianne Mogler took a shot along the right side that would have cut the deficit in half; however, was stopped by a diving Heber, keeping the Mastodons off of the board. The third and final goal game in the 77th minute, giving the contest its 3-0 final tally.
Western Michigan out-shot the Mastodons 21-3 in the game, with Mogler taking two shots and Rachel Good one. Dunning ended with a match-high six saves, while the Broncos held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks in the contest.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday, August 30, against Ball State starting at 2:30 p.m., the second match of a men's / women's doubleheader at Hefner Field.
