Women's Volleyball Kicks Off Season with IPFW Invitational

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The 2015 IPFW women's volleyball season kicks off with the IPFW Invitational Sponsored by Hyatt Place, August 28-29. The Mastodons will play host to Central Michigan, Eastern Illinois, and UIC over the course of two days and six matches.

Summit League Preseason Poll...
IPFW was picked to finish sixth in the Summit League preseason poll of the league's head coaches. The Mastodons received 28 points, tying with Omaha, as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.
Defending Summit League champion Denver was selected as the favorite to win the 2015 volleyball crown. The Pioneers collected seven first-place votes and 63 total points in the poll.
Season Openers...
IPFW is 22-17 all-time in season-openers, and is currently riding a four-match winning streak. During that run, the Mastodons have defeated Loyola Chicago (2011), Murray State (2012), Duquesne (2013), and Saint Francis (Pa) (2014). The last time IPFW lost a season-opener was on Aug. 27, 2010, when the 'Dons fell to Tulsa 3-0 as part of the IPFW Invitational.
After opening the season on the road in 2014, the Mastodons return to the Gates Center to open the season at home for the third time in the last four seasons. In its history, IPFW is 10-6 when starting the season at home and 26-13 all-time in home openers.
IPFW Invitational...
The IPFW Invitational returns to the Gates Sports Center and the newly named Arnie Ball Court after taking 2014 off while the new Gates Center floor was installed. The 14th annual IPFW Invitational welcomes Central Michigan, Eastern Illinois, and UIC for the two-day event.
IPFW won the 2013 tournament, defeating Duquesne, Southern Illinois, and Connecticut, while dropping only one set. Since 1997, the Mastodons have hosted the IPFW invitational 14 times. During that stretch, the tournament was not player five times (1998, 2001, 2008, 2011, and 2014). Since 1982, IPFW has hosted a tournament all but eight seasons, the five previously mentioned, along with 1995, 1996, and 1998. In 1985, IPFW held two tournaments, the IPFW Invitational and the IPFW Classic.
