Career-High Saves Effort From Dunning Not Enough in 2-1 Loss
9/13/2015 5:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
INDIANAPOLIS - The first goal from Gaby Romo this season, and a career-high save effort from sophomore goalkeeper Kiley Dunning was not enough as IPFW fell 2-1 to the Butler Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon.
Dunning's 13 saves are the most in a single match since Jodi Schnelker picked up 21 saves against Ashland in September of 2002.
"The progress this team has made over the last two games has been fantastic," said IPFW head coach Jason Burr. "To see Gaby score against Butler - a school that no player on our current squad had scored on - was fantastic. We defended a lot but due to our organization and discipline in that portion of the game, we gave ourselves a chance to get a result today."
Dunning came up big early in the match, with four saves over the first eight minutes of the game, before the Bulldogs (6-2-1) converted with a sliding kick from Halle Stelbasky to put the hosts ahead 1-0.
Just over 10 minutes later the Mastodons (0-8) saw Romo provide the equalizer off of a free kick from straight away that beat Butler goalkeeper Kim Janitz to the left portion of the goal. Butler attempted three shots in the final six minutes - all stopped by Dunning - as the teams went into the locker room knotted in a 1-1 tie.
The teams played nearly 25 minutes of scoreless soccer in the second half before the hosts got the eventual game-winner from Paige Monaghan from 20 yards out. The Mastodons kept fighting; however, the strong Bulldog defense kept IPFW without a shot over the final 20-plus minutes in the match to secure the Butler 2-1 victory.
Butler out-shot the Mastodons 26-3, while taking four corner kicks while keeping IPFW without a corner kick attempt.
"You can see it in the players' eyes that we are starting to turn a corner on the season, and we can't wait to get back out on the field tomorrow to start training for Friday night's home match," said Burr.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, September 18 when the team hosts the Taylor Trojans in a 7 p.m. kickoff at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
