Women's Soccer Ties Scoring Record in Lopsided Win
9/18/2015 10:53:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The team's goals (seven), points (19) tied school records set against Delaware State on October 28, 2005. Individually, Paityn Fleming tied an individual school record with a pair of assists, something that had happened 17 times prior, most recently by Kallianne Mogler against Loyola on September 21, 2014, and the seventh time total that a freshman has accomplished the feat.
Brooke Bishir, Kassidy Simpkins, Erin Gill, Katrina Sutherly, Rachel Good, and Mogler each found of the back of the net once in the win, while Paityn Fleming dished out two assists. Kiley Dunning picked up her first collegiate shutout, picking up five saves while keeping the clean sheet.
Bishir got the scoring started in the 14th minute of the match when she took a pass from Simpkins and beat the keeper to the right-hand post. Less than two minutes later Simpkins put a cross through the box that was knocked into the back of the net by a Taylor player, for an IPFW own goal.
Five minutes later Simpkins scored one of her own off of a Mayson Whitman missed shot attempt that was stopped by Taylor goalkeeper Anna Miller. Just under six minutes later Fleming picked up her first assist when she found a charging Gill who finished just in front of the net, giving the game its 4-0 halftime score.
The teams played the first 30 minutes of the second half without a score, before Sutherly scored her first goal of the season - also assisted by Fleming - to put the Mastodons ahead 5-0. Good scored for the first time this season just over six minutes later when she took the ball down the field and beat the keeper to the right-hand side of the post.
Mogler capped off the evening with a shot that went over the goalkeeper's head, closing the door on the seven-goal evening by the Mastodons.
The Mastodons return to action on Wednesday, September 23, when the team travels to Detroit to take on the Titans in a 3 p.m. kickoff.
