Late Goal by Lazzerini Gives Mastodons Road Victory
9/26/2015 6:40:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Andie Lazzerini buried the game winning goal for the IPFW women's soccer team with nine minute to play as the Mastodons closed out non-league play with a 3-2 victory over Robert Morris. The 'Dons head into Summit League competition with a 2-0-1 record in their last three matches.
Rachel Good tallied the first multi-assist game of her career.
Both sides tallied 13 shots in the game, but the 'Dons out-shot the Colonials 8-6 on goal. Good was the only Mastodon to record multiple shots, taking three on the afternoon.
It didn't start well for IPFW as Robert Morris struck first, scoring in the sixth minute, as the Colonial player dodged through several Mastodon defenders to beat keeper Kiley Dunning. The goal ended Dunning's shutout streak at 225:50, the fifth longest in program history.
The Mastodons nearly responded less than a minute later as Good's shot was saved by the Colonial's goalie. The 'Dons eventually tied the game with 10:15 left in the first half. Katrina Sutherly took a pass from Paityn Fleming 35 yards out and deposited the long chip shot in the top right corner for her second goal of the season.
In the 59th minute, Kassidy Simpkins gave the Mastodons the lead, taking a long header from Good and flicking the ball over the head of the RMU goalkeeper from the right side for her second tally of the year. The lead was short lived for IPFW as the Colonials responded 46 seconds later on a header off a corner kick.
With 8:59 left in the game, Good sent a long shot into the box that hit the cross bar and landed at the foot of Lazzerini who buried the ball into the back of the wide open net to put IPFW back on top for good.
IPFW begins Summit League play at Western Illinois on October 2 with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
