IPFW Falls to Omaha in Last Second Heartbreaker

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW women's basketball fell to Omaha at home after a near buzzer-beating shot from the Mavericks with 1.7 seconds left, 60-58.
Keanna Gary led the Mastodons, earning her third double-double of the season with a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. De'Jour Young added 12 points and four rebounds. Rachel Rinehart finished with seven points, seven rebounds, to go along with a game-high four assists and four steals.
The 'Dons came out strong in the first quarter, scoring on the opening drive and taking a 10-5 lead at the 4:25 mark. The Mavericks used an 11-2 run to close out the first quarter leading 16-12.
Omaha continued its streak into the second quarter, but a series of free throws from KeShyra McCarver pulled IPFW within two, 25-23, with 1:51 left. Gary tied the game 25-25 with 32 seconds remaining in the quarter, but Mavs responded by scoring with two seconds left to take a 27-25 advantage at the half.
Trailing 41-40 at the end of the third, Rinehart opened the fourth quarter with a pair of 3-pointers to give the Mastodons a 46-41 lead over the Mavericks. A pair of free throws from Gary gave IPFW its largest lead of the game, 48-41. Omaha went on a 15-3 run midway through the fourth quarter, regaining the lead, 58-53, with 1:56 remaining in regulation.
The 'Dons got a pair of free throws by Kamilah Carter, setting up Allyson Bunch to drill one from downtown, tying the game 58-58 with 50 seconds to go. A pair of well-timed offensive rebounds allowed the Mavs to setup the final shot and sneak away with the win.
As a team, the Mastodons connected on 19-of-59 (32.2%) of their field goals, including 4-of-18 (22.2%) beyond the arc, and 16-of-19 (84.2%) at the free throw line.
IPFW hosts its ninth annual Pink Out game to benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation January 30, at 2 p.m. against Denver. IPFW will be honoring those women who have survived breast cancer during a special luncheon at noon in the International Ballroom. Survivors who register online or over the phone may attend free of charge and includes a game ticket, special gift from Vera Bradley, and half-time recognition.
