IPFW Defeats Visiting Western Illinois 88-67

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis scored a game-high 19 points to lead IPFW to an 88-67 men's college basketball Summit League victory past Western Illinois University Sunday afternoon at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne. Senior Joe Reed/Greenwood added 17 points, while classmate Michael Calder/Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and junior DeAngelo Stewart/Detroit, Mich. each contributed 16 points for the host Mastodons (18-6, 7-2 Summit League), who remain in a four-way tie for first in the league standings. Garret Covington led the visiting Leathernecks (7-13, 0-9 Summit League) with 17 points. IPFW will play on the road at the University of South Dakota Thursday, February 4 at 8 p.m. ET in Vermillion, South Dakota.
IPFW, ranked No. 23 in this week's The CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, answered a game-opening three-point field goal by Covington (19:00) with 21-7 run to lead 21-10 at 11:50, getting nine quick points from Landis. The Mastodons maintained their advantage at 28-17 with 7:41 left in the first half after a conventional three-point play inside by Reed. IPFW took its largest lead of half at 32-19 via a Calder layup at 6:15, but the Leathernecks used a 13-4 run to close to within 36-32 (1:00), and the hosts led 38-34 at halftime. Landis and Reed each scored 11 first-half points, while Covington had 10 points for WIU.
IPFW opened the second half with 12-4 run to lead 50-38 at 16:18 following a three-pointer by Stewart, and two more three-pointers from Stewart and Landis, respectively, made it 57-40 with 14:33 on the clock, while a Reed layup at 11:55 made it 62-44. The Mastodons increased their margin to 20 points on three occasions in second half, while WIU managed to close to within 74-62 at 5:46 after a three-pointer from Covington, but IPFW answered with a basket inside from redshirt-junior Brent Calhoun/Indianapolis at 5:19 (76-62), followed by a slam dunk in traffic by redshirt-freshman John Konchar/Chicago, Ill. at 4:35 (78-62), assisted by Calhoun, and the Mastodons' final margin was their largest of game.

Calhoun had eight points, eight rebounds and a career-high three assists. IPFW shot 56% (33-59) from the field, including 63% (19-30) in the second half, 45% (9-20) on three-pointers, 70% (7-10) in the second half and 65% (13-20) at the free throw line. The Mastodons enjoyed advantages of 42-28 in points scored in the paint, 13-5 in points off turnovers and 22-15 in bench scoring.
Covington led Western Illinois with his 17 points, while Jabari Sandifer added 11 points and a game-high six assists. WIU shot 41% (25-61) from the field, including 32% (7-22) on three-pointers and 56% (10-18) at the line.
IPFW was playing Western Illinois for the 20th time in a series that began on January 11, 1988 (L 74-63). The Mastodons lead the series, 13-7, including four wins in the last five games between the two schools.
IPFW has equaled its finest start to a season as a Division I program (2001-02) with its 18-6 record. The 2013-14 team also began 18-6 before finishing 25-11, the program's best DI season to date.
