Mastodons Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime to Pioneers
1/9/2016 5:55:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DENVER - The first overtime game of the year for the IPFW women's basketball team was not a kind one to the Mastodons as they fell at Denver 53-50.
Kamilah Carter led the 'Dons with 14 points on the afternoon. Keanna Gary nearly earned a third straight double-double, tying a career-high with 16 rebounds to go along with seven points. KeShyra McCarver added 11 points while De'Jour Young and Josie Fisher finished with nine and seven, respectively. Young led the team with three assists and three steals while Courtney Ogle had a season-high three blocks.
The Mastodons jumped out to a quick lead in the opening quarter thanks to a pair of three's from McCarver. IPFW went through a tough offensive stretch to begin the second quarter as it was held off the scoreboard until the 6:30 mark. A 16-4 run from there put the 'Dons back in lead heading into halftime 27-20.
IPFW pushed its lead to double-digits, and thanks to a jumper from Peyton Fallis it let 42-27 over the Pioneers with 2:04 remaining in the third. The Mastodon offense struggled to get going in the fourth as Denver climbed back into it, cutting the lead to two before Carter hit one from long range to end the drought with 5:10 to play.
The two teams traded points until the Pioneers tied the game with 29 seconds left on a layup, sending the game into overtime. The extra frame was just as unkind to the 'Dons as Denver scored the first four points while IPFW would receive only a layup from Gary.
On the day, the Mastodons shot 21-of-64 (32.8%) from the floor while making 5-of-22 (22.7%) from beyond the arc, and managing 3-of-7 (42.9%) at the charity stripe. The 'Dons held the Pioneers to only one 3-pointer on the day and a season-low 8.3 percent (1-of-12) from long range.
IPFW next plays host to South Dakota State January 13 for a 7 p.m. game inside the Gates Sports Center.
