Fort Wayne Goes into Overtime with Western Illinois
10/21/2016 9:11:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite two overtimes on Friday (Oct. 21), neither Western Illinois nor Fort Wayne could manage a goal in the Mastodons 0-0 tie with the Leathernecks at Hefner Field.
The Mastodons (3-11-2, 0-3-2 Summit League) held control of play for the majority of the final 90 minutes of play, having a corner kick lead 8-1 after overtime. Deanna Hecht had seven shots, three of which were on goal. Kallianne Mogler contributed four shots, and Chloee Foor and Gaby Romo each contributed a trio of shots.
Mogler had a scoring attempt that deflected off the crossbar in the 65th minute, which was the best opportunity that the Mastodons had to score. Several of Hecht's seven shots were very close to sneaking past the Western Illinois keeper, including one that was only saved by two fully outstretched arms.
Haley Lydon was in goal for the entirety of the match, seeing her first action of the season, and was credited with the shutout. She recorded seven saves for the Mastodons. Lydon faced a shot in overtime that was sent in and hit the left post, after which she scrambled to stop the play from advancing any further. This was arguably the reason that the result of the match was a tie and not a Mastodon loss.
The Leathernecks record moves to 4-9-2, 2-3-1.
The Mastodons will be back in action on Sunday (Oct. 23) as they welcome North Dakota State to Fort Wayne at 1 p.m. for the final Mastodon home match of the season. This match serves as Fort Wayne's senior day celebration.
