Fort Wayne Men's Soccer Falls 4-1 At Western Illinois
11/5/2016 2:34:00 PM | Men's Soccer
MACOMB, Ill. - Fort Wayne men's soccer fell 4-1 on Saturday (Nov. 5) afternoon at Western Illinois in the 2016 finale for the Mastodons.
Fort Wayne entered the match in contention for one of two available spots in The Summit League Tournament, but a loss to Western Illinois eliminated the 'Dons. Even if Oral Roberts and Eastern Illinois lose Saturday evening to create a three-way tie for the final spot, Fort Wayne doesn't advance in that tiebreaker.
A header by Armel Kouassi in the 23rd minute accounted for Western Illinois' first goal of the game. Just over five minutes later it was Kouassi again, this time scoring off a cross from Jacob Bevan to put the Leathernecks up 2-0. Western Illinois made it 3-0 with a score in the 60th minute. Bevan dribbled past the keeper for his ninth goal of the year.
The Mastodons got on the board off a free kick by Spencer Brown at 67:37. However the Leathernecks extended their lead back to three goals in the 70th minute when Kouassi earned the hat trick with this third goal of the game. Bevan assisted on the goal.
Western improves to 8-9-1 (3-3-0 Summit) and keeps their Summit League Tournament hopes alive. Fort Wayne ends their season 9-9-0 (2-4-0 Summit).
