IPFW Unable to Hold on to Halftime Lead on the Road
2/11/2016 10:56:00 PM | Women's Basketball
OMAHA, Neb. - The IPFW women's basketball team was unable to hold on to a 10-point halftime lead as it fell at Omaha 71-64.
Kamilah Carter led the Mastodons with 19 points on the night while dishing out three assists. Keanna Gary nearly pulled off a double-double, finishing with 15 points, on 7-of-7 shooting, to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Allyson Bunch tied a season-high with 14 points, including hitting four from downtown. Rachel Rinehart led the 'Dons with a game-high five assists while De'Jour Young picked off a game-high three steals.
Gary gave IPFW a 17-15 lead at the end of the first quarter as she grabbed a rebound and laid it in as time expired. In the second, up by two, 19-17, the Mastodons used a 15-5 run to take a 34-24 lead into halftime.
The 'Dons opened the third quarter on a 5-2 advantage, but Omaha caught fire, scoring 11 straight points to cut IPFW's lead to two, 39-37. The Mavericks took the lead on a 3-pointer with 2:57 left in the quarter before Bunch scored on a layup at the buzzer, as the Mastodons trailed 51-50.
Bunch opened the fourth quarter by drilling a three to give the 'Dons back the lead, but the Mavs scored the next four points to regain the lead for good. IPFW cut the UNO lead to one on a jumper from Carter with 3:15 to play, but that would be as close as it would get as Omaha scored the final six points.
For the game, the 'Dons out-shot the Mavericks from the floor, finishing 27-of-55 (49.1%) including 8-of-18 (44.4%) from beyond the arc, while making 2-of-9 (22.2%) at the free throw line.
IPFW travels north to face Summit League co-leader South Dakota State on February 13 for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
