IPFW Holds Off Visiting Denver 88-84

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis scored a game-high 30 points, including seven three-point field goals, to lead IPFW to an 88-84 men's college basketball Summit League home win past the University of Denver Saturday night at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne. Landis' third 30-point game of the season helped the host Mastodons (20-7, 9-3 Summit League) withstand a school-record 20 three-pointers (20-32) by the visiting Pioneers (13-13, 5-8 Summit League). Marcus Byrd led Denver with a career-high 28 points, including eight three-pointers. IPFW will remain home for its next game against South Dakota State University Thursday, February 18 at 7 p.m. The Mastodons and Jackrabbits are tied for first place in the Summit League standings.
IPFW, ranked No. 16 in this week's The CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, led early at 5-0 after Landis opened the contest with a three-pointer from the right wing at the end of the shot clock, followed by a tip-in basket from redshirt-freshman John Konchar/Chicago, Ill. Denver answered with an 11-2 run to lead 11-7 at 14:04, getting five quick points from Thomas Neff. The Mastodons responded with an 18-7 run to go back in front, 25-18, at 8:56 – getting 11 points from Landis, including three three-pointers. IPFW led 35-31 at halftime behind 14 first-half points from Landis, including 4-4 three-pointers, and Konchar had 10 points at the break, while Byrd had 10 points for the Pioneers.
IPFW opened the second half with seven-straight points to take a 42-31 lead at 18:38, getting five quick points from senior Michael Calder/Fort Lauderdale, Fla., including a three-pointer along with a steal and slam dunk. Denver again answered, this time with a 10-0 run to make it 42-41 at 15:34. The Mastodons used a 7-0 run to lead 55-47 at 11:16, getting another three-pointer from Landis, along with a drive to the basket and huge two-handed slam dunk in traffic by Konchar at 12:46. IPFW later put together a 12-0 run with two three-pointers from Calder to lead 76-64 with under a minute to play. The Pioneers, however, made six-straight three-pointers in a span of 37-seconds to close to within 85-82 with 12-seconds remaining. The Mastodons, though, made 12-14 free throws over the final 46-seconds to claim the triumph, getting 4-4 from Calder, 5-6 from Landis and 3-4 from junior DeAngelo Stewart/Detroit, Mich.
Landis led IPFW with his game-high and third 30-point game this season, making 9-13 field goals, including 7-9 three-pointers and 5-6 free throws, adding seven assists. He also established a new school-record for season three-pointers, as he now totals 99, one more than former Mastodon Nick Wise (98) made during 2001-02. Calder matched his career-high with 20 points, including 4-6 from three-point territory, adding five rebounds. Konchar and senior Joe Reed/Greenwood each finished with 14 points with Konchar adding six rebounds and three steals. IPFW shot 62% (28-45) from the field, including 67% (12-18) on three-pointers and 80% (20-25) at the free throw line.
Byrd led Denver with his career-high 28 points, including 8-12 three-pointers. Nate Engesser had 24 points for the Pioneers, including 6-8 three-pointers, while Neff contributed a career-high 21 points, including 5-8 three-pointers. DU shot 59% (32-54) from the field, including 63% (20-32) on school-record 20 three-pointers and did not have an attempt at the line.
IPFW was playing Denver for the sixth time overall since the Pioneers joined the league for 2013-14, and the Mastodons lead the young series, 5-1, including four-straight wins in the matchup.
IPFW has attained its finest start to a season as a Division I program (2001-02) with its 20-7 record. It's the second 20-win season for the Mastodons since moving up to Division I, along with the 2013-14 team that finished 25-11 ... the program's best DI season to date.
