Mastodons Unable to Complete Comeback in 1,000th Program Match
2/7/2016 12:38:00 AM | Men's Volleyball
LEBANON, Ill. – Despite double-doubles from both Andrew Sellan and Michael Keegan, the IPFW men's volleyball team was unable to complete a comeback, falling at McKendree in five sets (25-18, 24-26, 15-25, 26-24, 12-15). The loss drops the Mastodons to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) play.
Sellan (22 kills, 10 digs) earned his first double-double of the year, his seventh in his career, while Keegan earned his first collegiate double-double (23 assists, 10 digs). Keegan added three kills, two blocks, and an assist, while Sellan also had an ace and two blocks.
Luis Bertran nabbed 18 digs during the match, moving him into second-place all-time in IPFW career digs (794), passing Tony Luhning (778). Bertran is now 22 digs shy of tying Jay Golsteyn (816) for the most career digs in program history.
Despite being down 24-19 late in the fourth set, the 'Dons used their final substitute following a Bearcat serving error, giving Max Hansen his first collegiate appearance. Facing a second match point and needing to win the fourth set, the Mastodons rallied for six-straight points behind Hansen serving. Both Tony Price and David Frazee were instrumental in the seven-point rally, as Price earned two kills and a block, while Frazee grabbed two kills and a block.
Each team were in a grudge match during the fifth set, eventually battling to a 9-8 McKendree lead. A Bearcat timeout would be enough to break up the Mastodon momentum as McKendree would eventually take the decisive set, 15-12.
In the opening set of the match, the Blue and White leaped out to a 12-5 advantage midway through, highlighted with an 8-1 run. The 'Dons would capitalized on a 5-1 run late in the set, eventually taking the first set 25-18.
The second set saw each team split the first 12 points as each team continued to fight back-and-forth, eventually being knotted at 14 each. The 'Dons found themselves in a hole, trailing 20-16, before they came back to tie it at 24 following a 6-2 run. Two errors on the Mastodons would be the ultimate factor as McKendree grabbed the second set 26-24.
The Bearcats would take advantage of the third set, going up 13-4 before the 'Dons tried to climb back in it with an 8-3 run, eventually cutting the McKendree lead to 16-12. The Bearcats would respond to grab the third set 25-15.
The Mastodons wrap up their seven-match road swing when they travel to Muncie, Indiana, to face in-state MIVA rival Ball State on Thursday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m.
