No. 1 IPFW Falls To No. 5 North Dakota State 69-68
3/7/2016 10:57:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Carlin Dupree scored a game-high 22 points, including the game-winning layup with four seconds remaining, to lead No. 5 seed North Dakota State to a 69-68 come-from-behind semifinal victory past No. 1 seed IPFW in the 2016 Summit League Men's Basketball Championship Tournament Monday night at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Dupree scored the final four points of the contest after a three-point field goal by redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis, who scored a team-high 19 points, had given the Mastodons (24-9) a 68-65 lead with 1:50 on the clock. The final margin was the first and only lead of the contest for the two-time defending tournament champion Bison (20-12). IPFW, regular season co-champions and top seed for league tourney, will now await pairings for the 2016 National Invitation Tournament that will be announced Sunday night, March 13.
IPFW scored the first eight points of the contest behind three-pointers by senior Michael Calder/Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Landis, who added a layup, as well, and the Mastodons led 15-2 at 14:41 following a layup by redshirt-freshman John Konchar/West Chicago, Ill. The advantage was up to 20-4 at 12:58 after a three-pointer from junior DeAngelo Stewart/Detroit, Mich. and a layup by freshman Charles Ruise Jr./Glen St. Mary, Fla. NDSU, however, battled back with a 9-2 run to close to within 22-13 at 9:33 after a three-pointer by Malik Clements. IPFW responded with three consecutive three-pointers by Landis, Konchar and Stewart, respectively, to take its largest lead of the contest at 31-13 with 5:59 on the first-half clock. The Mastodons led 36-21 at the intermission behind eight points each from Calder, Landis and Konchar, along with six points, off the bench, by Stewart.
IPFW led 38-23 with 18:09 left following a steal and slam dunk by Konchar, and it was 48-35 with 13:08 remaining after a three-pointer by Landis. The Mastodons maintained a double-figure lead for much of the second half and still led 64-54 with 4:18 on the clock after an offensive rebound basket inside by redshirt-junior Brent Calhoun/Indianapolis. NDSU, though, refused to go away and fought back with a game-ending 15-4 run over the final 4:06 for the victory. Dupree started the run with a three-pointer, and another three-pointer from A.J. Jacobson tied it for the first time at 65-65 with 2:08 to play. Landis drilled a three-pointer at 1:50 to make it 68-65, but Dupree scored inside at 0:43 to make it 68-67 and his layup with four seconds on the clock gave the Bison their first and only lead of the night. Landis missed a running three-point attempt from the right side of the floor at the final buzzer.
Landis, the Summit League Player of the Year, led IPFW with his 19 points, including 5-14 three-pointers to increase his new school season record to 121, adding three assists and two steals. Konchar finished with 17 points, a game and career-high seven steals, and three assists before fouling out late. Calder added 16 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Stewart contributed six points and seven rebounds. IPFW shot 39% (24-62) from the field, including 40% (14-35) on three-pointers and 46% (6-13) at the free throw line.

IPFW was playing NDSU for the 24th time and the Bison lead the closely-played series, 13-11, as the two teams split a pair of games earlier this season ... each winning on its home court ... the Mastodons 79-74 in Fort Wayne (1/21) and NDSU 62-46 in Fargo (2/6).
