Mastodons Jump Two Spots on Final Day to Finish Fifth

MUNCIE, Ind. - The IPFW men's golf team used its final round of the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational to propel them to a fifth place finish, shooting a two-day score of 1,109. The tournament counted the top five scores on each team of six players, rather than the traditional format of playing five and counting four scores.
Hosted by Ball State at the par-70, Delaware Country Club, the tournament was played at 6,438 yards. The host Cardinals took the team title by seven strokes over Cleveland State with a 1,086. Ryan Wenzler of Wright State claimed the individual medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 4-over-par 214.
The Mastodons jumped two spots on the final day, passing Oakland and Summit League rival IUPUI to finish three back of Valparaiso.
A pair of freshmen in Zach Schroeder and Josh Keating led the 'Dons in a tie for 12th place with scores of 219, respectively. Schroeder carded a team-low 1-over-par 71 in the final round, recording four birdies for the day. Keating carded three birdies for the round to finish at 2-over-par 72. Dan Wert ended the weekend tied for 19th after shooting a 75 to finish at 222. One shot back with a 73 for the round was Jacob Groninger in a tie for 26th. Groninger led the Mastodons with seven birdies on the day, including five on the front-nine.
Finishing tied for 55th was David Watterson with a final-round 76 to card a combined score of 231. Closing out the team scoring with an 82 on the day was Devin Jenkins who finished in 61st place with a 233.
IPFW heads to the Summit League Championship May 1-3 at the Sand Creek Station Golf Club in Newton, Kansas.
