Mastodons Fall In MIVA Quarterfinals to No. 2 Ohio State
4/17/2016 9:22:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The IPFW men's volleyball team was unable to stop the Ohio State offense as the top-seeded Buckeyes swept the Mastodons (18-25, 17-25, 17-25). The Bucks, ranked second nationally, move on to the MIVA Semifinals while the IPFW season comes to an end.
Alex Harthaller led the 'Dons, hitting .500 (11-1-20), while Tony Price had a team-high six digs. Luis Bertran ends his illustrious career at IPFW, holding the school record in career digs at 965. Andrew Sellan's collegiate career closes as he sits 11th in IPFW career kills (1,346) and fourth in career kills for the rally scoring era (2001-present).
The Blue and White went point-for-point early in the match as the teams were knotted after the first eight points. Ohio State would take a 12-8 lead over the 'Dons before IPFW battled back with an 8-4 run to tie the set at 16. The Buckeyes would then earn the next four points and not look back as OSU grabbed the first set 25-18.
Once again each team would be tied at four each to start the second set, but OSU would take the next five points. The Mastodons battled back to make it 11-8, but the Buckeyes proved too much as they jumped to a 20-13 advantage, eventually taking the set 25-17.
IPFW took an early lead to start the third set, going up 7-4 before. The 'Dons continued to press as they took a 12-8 advantage, but the Buckeyes fought back to tie the set at 16, eventually taking the set 25-17.
