
Gaby Romo Recognized As A 2016 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- IPFW senior Gaby Romo has been recognized as a 2016 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine. She was selected to the Women's Soccer First Team, one of just 20 on the first team, among four teams within the sport totaling 80 student-athletes from colleges and universities nationwide.
Romo has a 3.94 cumulative grade point average and attained a perfect 4.0 during both academic semesters of 2015-16 while majoring in Biology. She has started 33 of 50 career matches, scoring seven goals, including four game-winners, with two assists for 16 career points. A recent IPFW Top 50 student honoree, she was presented the S-AS Sportsmanship Award at the department's 2016 Masty Awards. Romo is a three-time recipient on the Summit League Fall Academic Honor Roll (2013-15) and was named to the 2014-15 Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence.
Romo serves as treasurer for the campus organization, Hispanos Unidos, a support group for Hispanic students and other members who are interested in Hispanic culture. She also serves as vice president for the Global Health Initiative campus organization, and volunteers at Matthew 25 Health & Dental Clinic, an organization for which she has traveled to Ecuador for community service projects. Gaby serves as a translator for non-English speaking patients at Matthew 25, as well as for Fort Wayne Community Schools. A member of the AmbassaDons, Romo served on the committee for the Indiana Latino Leadership Conference hosted by IPFW, where she presented a workshop on being a collegiate student-athlete to high school Latinos in Indiana, stressing the importance of higher education and how to apply for admission to colleges and universities. Her research in the biology department includes a project on the characterization of cyanobacteria from the biological soil crusts of the Indiana Dunes State Park.
Diverse magazine recognized more than 1,000 outstanding minority student-athletes nominated by their respective institutions representing 36 collegiate sports.
