FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne women's soccer team opens the 2016 season on Friday (Aug. 19) in a road non-conference match at Western Michigan.

ABOUT FORT WAYNE
Third-year head coach Jason Burr welcomes back 15 players from last year's team, including nine juniors and seniors, while adding 12 newcomers to the squad. The Mastodons went 4-13-2 last season.
FORWARDS
Six Mastodon forwards return for the front line of the 2016 campaign. Seniors Andie Lazzerini, Mayson Whitman and Katrina Sutherly, junior Kallianne Mogler, and sophomores Deanna Hecht and Chani Warfield come in this season ready to fight for time. Lazzerini and Mogler both recorded five points last season, recording two goals and an assist each. Whitman logged time in 19 games last year, starting 12. Sutherly made 18 appearances in 2015. The Mastodons also add freshmen Chloee Foor, Gabbie Mann, and Kimberly Flores in the front.
MIDFIELDERS
The Mastodon midfield returns senior duo Katie Hartnett and Gaby Romo, as well as sophomore Paityn Fleming. Of those three, Fleming recorded the most minutes, getting the start in six of her 18 appearances. Romo also saw a significant chunk of minutes in her eight starts. The 'Dons also add a quartet of freshmen to beef up the midfield with Reyse Stirrett, Kendall Quinn, Hannah Kroger and Claire Cody.
DEFENDERS
Junior Kassidy Simpkins returns to Fort Wayne as one of the leaders in points from last season, netting two goals and one assist. Senior Malissa Hofmeister and sophomores Allyson Hayner and Lindsay Yankasky also return to bulk up the back line. Lauren Lawrence, Emily Hayner, Randi Jannette and Vanessa Chaparro are four freshmen that have joined the defensive squad this season and will be contending for playing time.
GOALKEEPERS
Senior Kiley Dunning logged time in 19 games last season and led the Summit League in total saves, fourth most in all of Division I. Sophomore Haley Lydon also returns for the Mastodons this season, after seeing time in six games last year. Freshman Amanda Cook joins the Mastodons in 2016.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
Western Michigan went 16-4-4 last season including a 3-0 victory over Fort Wayne on Aug. 28. The Broncos won the Mid-American Conference and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, falling to Florida 1-0 in the opening round. They have been picked to finish second in the MAC West according to the preseason poll. They tied IUPUI 2-2 in an exhibition contest to open 2016 competition.
SCHEDULE
The Mastodons, in addition to their strenuous Summit League schedule, face off against a challenging non-conference slate that includes teams from the Big East (Butler), Mid-American Conference (Ball State, Bowling Green, Western Michigan), Missouri Valley Conference (Saint Louis), Horizon League (Youngstown State) and Ohio Valley (Eastern Illinois).
LAST TIME OUT
Fort Wayne fell 3-1 at Oakland on Sunday, Aug. 14 in an exhibition contest. Gabbie Mann scored for the Mastodons in the contest.
