Mastodon Comeback Comes Up Just Short on the Road

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought five-set road match Tuesday night (Aug. 30), as the Mastodons fell to Western Michigan 3-2 (25-21, 25-16, 30-32, 19-25, 15-13).
Nicole Rightnowar, Somer Johnson and Madison Jaqua each had a double-double for the 'Dons. Rightnowar finished with a team-high 16 kills to go along with 12 digs. Johnson ended the night with a team-high 21 digs and 13 kills for her third double-double of the season. Jaqua finished with 36 assists and 10 digs. Lauren Hoffman contributed 10 kills while Victoria Mills had 15 assists and Olivia Hahn added 17 digs.
After trading points early in the opening set, the Broncos used a five-point swing to go up by seven and eventually go on to take the set. WMU jumped out to another early lead with a 5-0 run to begin the second set as the 'Dons were unable to fight back down the stretch.
Trailing by four points in the third set, Fort Wayne rattled off four straight to tie the score at 12-12. The two sides battled it out in the frame, fighting through 17 ties and nine lead changes. Each side had multiple set-point opportunities, but it was the Mastodons who were able to string together two points at the end to win the set.
The 'Dons never trailed in the fourth, jumping out to an early lead before a 9-2 run put the set away for good. Fort Wayne hit a match-high .452 in the frame.
The Mastodons took the early advantage in the fifth set before the Broncos knotted it up at 12-12. Western Michigan scored four of the final five points the take the set and the match.
Fort Wayne returns to action Friday night (Sept. 2) at Bowling Green for a 7 p.m. match.
