First Day in the Big Apple Leaves Mastodons with Sour Taste

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped both its matches to begin the Hofstra/Stony Brook Invite Friday (Sept. 16), falling to American 3-1 (33-31, 23-25, 25-14, 25-21) and Hofstra 3-2 (25-19. 23-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-9).
In the first match of the day, the Mastodons were led by double-doubles from Nicole Rightnowar (18 kills, 12 digs) and Madison Jaqua (43 assists, 10 digs). Somer Johnson added 16 kills and nine digs, while Lauren Hoffman finished with nine kills. Defensively, Olivia Hahn led the team with 15 digs while Natalie Seiler had three blocks.
The 'Dons opened the match with a 6-0 lead before American came back to win the set by scoring the final three points. Fort Wayne held an early lead in the second set before the Eagles tied the frame 23-23, but the Mastodons scored the next two points to earn the victory. American went up early in the third set and the 'Dons were unable to make a comeback. A 5-0 run by the Eagles midway through the fourth set put them into the lead as they went on to take the set and the match.
In the nightcap, Hoffman finished with a career-high 17 kills to lead the Mastodons. Rightnowar earned her second double-double of the day with 14 kills and 12 digs. Johnson also finished in double-digits with 11 kills. Victoria Mills earned her second double-double of the season with 23 assists and 11 digs while Jaqua led the team with 26 assists. Seiler led Fort Wayne with four blocks and three aces.
Hofstra scored the first three points to begin the match before taking the opening set. Things were looking tough for the Mastodons in the second set as they trailed 19-16. An 8-2 Fort Wayne run pushed them ahead for good to tie the match.
Trailing by five, 14-9, in the third set, the 'Dons put together seven straight points to go out in front. The Mastodons trailed by five in the fourth set before coming back to lead 23-22. The Pride took four of the next five points to force a fifth and final set. Hofstra scored the first three points of the final frame, as Fort Wayne was unable to overcome the early deficit.
