'Dons Fall in Straight Sets to No. 12 UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Despite a strong showing by Fort Wayne freshman Pelegrin Vargas, the Mastodons fell to No. 12 UC Santa Barbara in straight sets (25-22, 25-14, 25-12) in the UCSB ASICS Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 6).
Vargas led the Mastodons with eight kills, only having two errors on the night, and finished with a .429 hitting percentage.
The 'Dons held a 12-8 lead in the first set before the Gauchos went on a 11-4 run to lead 19-16. The 'Dons outhit the Gauchos .233 to .212 in the first set.
Fort Wayne could not match a strong Santa Barbara team that hit .419 and .824 in the second and third sets respectively. Jacob Delson led the Gauchos with 16 kills, while pitching in five digs and three assists.
Alex Dickmann, Austin Neace and Nick Smalter all added four kills apiece. Michael Keegan and Jack Carlson led the Mastodons with five digs each. Keegan also had 16 assists, while Gabriel Quinones added eight.
Fort Wayne falls to 0-4, while UC Santa Barbara improves to a perfect 3-0.
Fort Wayne is back in action at home against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday (Jan. 13) at 7 p.m.
