Men's Golf Has a Record Setting Day

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - It was a record setting day for the Fort Wayne men's golf team, as the Mastodons set or tied three program records during the opening day of the Fighting Irish Classic. As a team, the 'Dons carded a 1-over-par 561 for the day and are in third place.
Hosted by Notre Dame at the par-70, 6,925-yard Warren Golf Course, the host Fighting Irish lead with a 36-hole score of 18-under-par 542. Davis Chatfield also of Notre Dame holds a one shot lead heading into the final day with a 5-under-par 135.
The record setting day began in the first round as the Mastodons set a new 18-hole team score with a 6-under-par 274. The new record comes exactly 10 years to the day that the previous mark of 277 was set during the first round of the IPFW Fall Classic in 2007. Fort Wayne carded a 287 during the second round, which also ranks in the top-10 in program history, as the 'Dons finished with a 561 through 36-holes, just two shots off the program mark. The team combined for 19 birdies and an eagle during their record-breaking first round.
Individually, freshman Eric Brinker tied the program record for 18-hole score, while setting a new mark for 36-hole score. He carded rounds of 66-71-137 and is tied for fifth place. Brinker's opening-round of 4-under-par 66 tied a mark set by Bruno Carvalho during the Summit League Championship on April 23, 2012. Brinker finished with four birdies and an eagle during the first round. He carded a 71 during round number two, finishing the day setting a new 36-hole mark with a 137. The previous record was held by three different golfers (four occasions), most recently accomplished by Patrick Kelley in March of 2009.
Callahan Elzey and Josh Keating are tied for 17th with scores of 141. Elzey fired rounds of 70 and 71, while Keating turned it around with scores of 71 and 70. Zac Turi was one shot back of Brinker in the first round, shooting a 67 before finished the day with a 75 for a combined score of 142 and is in 22nd place. Turi's 3-under-par 67 is now tied for third lowest in program history. Zach Schroeder closed out the team scoring on the day with rounds of 71-75-146 and is tied for 41st.
The final round of the Fighting Irish Classic will have Fort Wayne teeing off beginning at 9:42 a.m., tomorrow, October 9.
