Fort Wayne Falls in Straight Sets at McKendree

LEBANON, Ill. - Despite Colton Stone's double-double, the Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fell at McKendree in straight sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) in the Harry M. Statham Sports Center on Saturday night (March 25).
The Mastodons spent the early portion of the first set trailing, but evened the score at 14 with a 5-1 run, capped off by a kill from Graydon Schroeder. Nick Smalter and Stone each had three kills in the first set. McKendree finished on a 4-1 run to take the set.
An early 7-1 run set the pace for the Mastodons in the second set, as they took an early 7-3 lead over the Bearcats. Richie Diedrich had a service ace to finish the run. McKendree answered with a run of its own to reach a 14-all tie. McKendree took five of the last seven points of the set to lead 2-0. Stone had seven kills in the set to lead the 'Dons.
Fort Wayne started the third set by taking the first four points behind Schroeder's service. The Mastodons continued to hold the lead until the Bearcats tied it up at 14-all. McKendree then went on a 6-2 run to open the largest lead of the set for either team. The 'Dons hit .400 in the final set, but McKendree took the last two points of the set.
Stone finished with 10 digs, tied with libero Scott McNerney for most on the evening for the 'Dons. Stone also led Fort Wayne in kills with 15, and Smalter pitched in 11. Austin Neace also contributed eight digs, while Diedrich had four blocks. Stone finished with a .346 percentage, while Smalter had .296. Fort Wayne had more kills and digs than the Bearcats with 41 and 33 respectively.
The Mastodons fall to 5-19 (2-10 MIVA) on the year, while McKendree improves to 9-16, (4-8) MIVA. Fort Wayne is back in action on Friday (March 31) as they return home after nine matches on the road. The 'Dons face off against Lindenwood at 7 p.m. on Arnie Ball Court.
