Mastodons Drop Opening Day of Ball State Tournament

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team had a tough start to the Ball State Tournament as the Mastodons fell to Bradley 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) and Navy 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-13). The 'Dons are now 3-3 on the season.
In their first match of the day, Elizabeth Fuerst and Nicole Rightnowar led the Mastodons with nine kills, respectively. Katie Crowe added seven kills and a pair of aces. Elizabeth Britner led the 'Dons with 11 digs while Madison Jaqua finished with 19 assists.
The two teams put up a tough fight in the opening set, exchanging seven leads with 15 tie scores. With the set tied 20-20, the Braves rattled off five straight points to take the set. Fort Wayne scored the opening point of second set, before Bradley followed with a 12-4 run to win the frame. The Braves ran away with the third set as the 'Dons trailed early with a 9-2 deficit.
Crowe led Fort Wayne in the second match of the day with a match-high 10 kills. Rightnowar finished with eight kills and 11 digs. Britner led the 'Dons with 14 digs while Jaqua led the way with 17 assists.
The Mastodons opened the afternoon match by winning the first point, but it was Navy scoring four of the next five points. Fort Wayne tied it at 20-20 before the Midshipmen scored three straight to win the opening set. The 'Dons jumped out to the early lead again in the second, but it was Navy using a five-point run to take the lead and the set. USNA opened the final frame with eight consecutive points that the Mastodons were unable to battle back from.
Fort Wayne closes out the Ball State Tournament tomorrow, September 2 at 7 p.m. against the host Cardinals.
