ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped its opening match of the Golden Grizzlies Invitational 3-1 (25-23, 29-31, 25-22, 26-24) to Towson.
Nicole Rightnowar led the Mastodons with a team-high 14 kills to go along with eight digs. Lauren Hoffman finished with 12 kills while Natalie Seiler had eight. Elizabeth Fuerst nearly had a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs. Sydney Boerst led the 'Dons with five blocks, including three solo blocks, while adding seven kills.
Madison Jaqua made a match-high 40 assists. Elizabeth Britner led Fort Wayne with 16 digs while Victoria Mills added a season-high 13.
Towson led early in the first set before the 'Dons took a 10-9 lead. The Tigers answered with a six-point run to take the lead and the set. It was a back-and-forth second set with 18 ties and four lead changes, going to extra points. Both sides had set point, but it was the Mastodons getting the final two on kills from Rightnowar to take the frame. Fort Wayne jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the third set, but Towson used a 7-1 run to go ahead for good. In the fourth, the Mastodons sprinted out to a 7-1 lead early. A 5-0 run by the Tigers midway through the set gave them the lead, and eventually the match.
Fort Wayne returns to action tomorrow, September 16, against host Oakland at noon.
