Fort Wayne Drops First Game of Road Trip to Coyotes

VERMILLION, S.D. - Anna Lappenküper scored the first 10 points of the game for the Fort Wayne women's basketball team, but the Mastodons were unable to contain the South Dakota Coyotes as they fell 85-43 in the first contest of a six-game road trip.
Lappenküper led the 'Dons with 13 points on the afternoon. She scored 10 of Fort Wayne's 15 points in the first period. De'Jour Young finished with eight points and a team-high four rebounds. Jaelencia Williams added six points for the Mastodons off the bench.
The 'Dons were unable to get things going early as South Dakota connected on its first five shots, as the Mastodons trailed 10-2, 2:29 into the game. Lappenküper ended the drought with a triple, but Fort Wayne would be unable to pull any closer. The 'Dons were held to single-digits in the second and third quarters as the Coyotes put the game out of reach.
For the afternoon the Mastodons shot 15-of-38 (39.5%) from the field, 3-of-14 (21.4%) on 3-point attempts and 10-of-15 (66.7%) at the free throw line.
Fort Wayne travels to defending Summit League champion Western Illinois Thursday, January 18 for an 8 p.m. ET game.
