MACOMB, Ill. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball squad picked up its third straight victory, as the Mastodons went on the road and defeated Western Illinois 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18). The win moves the 'Dons into a tie for fourth place in the Summit League.
Sydney Boerst had an outstanding match at the net, finishing with a career-high 17 kills, while also hitting a career-high .640 (17-1-25). Her .640 hitting percentage (minimum 20 attempts), ranks sixth all-time in program history. It was the highest hitting percentage by a Mastodon since Haley Emenhiser hit .714, also at Western Illinois, on Nov. 9, 2012.
Nicole Rightnowar earned a double-double, finishing with 14 kills and a match-high 18 digs. Katie Crowe also had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Je'Bria Green finished with a career-high 10 kills, as she also led the Mastodons with six blocks. Madison Jaqua led the way with a match-high 40 assists. Elizabeth Britner added 12 digs.
After trailing most of the first set, the Mastodons went on a 5-0 run late in frame to tie it 21-21. The 'Dons were unable to stay hot as WIU scored the final four points to take the opening set. The Mastodons trailed again early in the second set, 7-5, but a 4-0 run gave them a lead they would not relinquish. As a team, Purdue Fort Wayne hit .516 in the second set.
The 'Dons would need to make another comeback in the third. Down 18-13, the Mastodons scored seven straight points to take the lead. WIU came back to take a 22-21 lead, but once again the 'Dons went on a run, scoring three straight, to win the set. The Mastodons jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth set as they ran away with it to win the match.
Purdue Fort Wayne continues its road trip when the Mastodons travel to Oral Roberts Friday, October 26 for an 8 p.m. ET match.
