Boerst and Rightnowar Set Career Highs, But 'Dons Fall in Five
10/26/2018 11:33:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
TULSA, Okla. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought five-set match on the road, as the Mastodons fell at Oral Roberts 3-2 (25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 19-25, 15-13).
Sydney Boerst led all players with a career-high 20 kills, eight blocks and hitting .548. Nicole Rightnowar had 19 kills and a match-high 27 digs, which tied a career-high. Madison Jaqua led the 'Dons with 40 assists. Elizabeth Britner ended the night with 21 digs.
The Mastodons fell behind early in the first set as Oral Roberts score five consecutive points midway through the set to put it away. The Golden Eagles again extended its lead midway through the second set as they used an 8-2 advantage to win the frame. Not wanting to go down without a fight, the 'Dons came out of the intermission and jumped out to a 7-2 lead to take the third set. In the fourth, the Mastodons trailed by two, 10-8. The 'Dons found their rhythm as they scored the next six points to take the lead and force a fifth set.
The final set was tightly contested throughout as neither team ever led by more than two. The Mastodons took the first two points before ORU responded to take a lead of its own. Back-and-forth they would go as the 'Dons led it 11-10. After a timeout by the Golden Eagles, they would score the next three points, as the Mastodons were unable to make one final comeback.
