DENVER - Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer ended their season on Thursday night (Nov. 8) dropping a 1-0 match to Omaha in the Summit League semifinal at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
The Mastodons and Mavericks were knotted at nil-nil through the first 45 minutes, and were even with three shots each.
Omaha found the net in minute 70 with Noor Hamadi ripping a deep shot from outside the 18 into traffic in the box. After the ball was deflected off a defender to slide past Tor Erik Larsen in the net. Assists went to Hugo Ellouk and Diego Gutierrez.
The Mavericks had a good chance to make it a 2-0 game, but Adam Gannon earned a team save by deflecting a shot on an otherwise open net with his chest.
Romain Lopez had a chance with a little less than eight minutes to go, breaking away from a group of defenders to go one-on-one. The angle was not there, however, to net the equalizer. Just moments later, Chris Baranowski had a header inside the six from a right-side cross, but it went just left of the goal. Lopez led the 'Dons with three shots, one on goal. Blake Cearns placed both of his shots on goal for the evening.
The Mastodons finish the season 10-8-1. Their 10 wins is the most in the Division I era for the program. Omaha improves to 7-7-1 and will move on to face Denver in the Summit League Championship match.
